The Minister of Justice of Mauritius has presented the Sexual Offences Bill in the National Assembly on Tuesday the 10th April, 2007, among others the Bill includes a clause, which deals with the waive of penalty for sodomy in case of mutual consent. As Muslims, we should raise our voice against such Bill, as it opens doors to unnatural sexual practices, and ultimately will lead to legalizing Homosexuality, Lesbianism and eventually to legalize marriages between people of same sexes…
According to the Quran, the origin of unnatural sexual activity Sodomy goes back to the days of Prophet Lot (A.S) whose nation was misled into this behaviour by Satan and how Allah destroyed them by showering rain of stones upon them. One day Angel Gabriel along with some other angels visited Prophet Abraham (A.S) and told him that they were going to Sodom to carry out the command of Allah. When they entered the town in human form, Prophet Lot was watering the fields. He warned them to be on guard against the wickedness of the people and took them to his own house as guests and to protect them as well. The wife of Lot, who was acting as an agent for the people, informed them at once that Lot had brought some travellers as guests. They surrounded the house of Lot and demanded him to deliver his guests to them. Lot pleaded to them to leave them alone but in vain. Finally, Angel Gabriel disclosed to Lot as to who they really were and thereafter carried out the command of Allah and destroyed the people.
Angel Gabriel blinded the people. He then asked Prophet Lot to depart from the town with his family and followers and thereafter, Allah rained down on them shower of stones and they were burried under the mountain of such stones.
According to Islam, Sodomy is a horrible crime which is worse than Zinaa (Fornication & Adultery). Although the mass media today portrays Sodomy as a natural act, according to Islam, it is a horrible crime. There are three reasons for this:
Firstly, Sodomy is an unnatural way of satisfying the sexual instinct, the thought of which had never occurred to anyone before the people of Lot. It is therefore an act of lewdness and indecency. “And Lot, when he said to his people: Do you commit a lewdness which no one has done before you in the worlds” 7:80
The fact that no one before the people of Lot had ever indulged in the act of sodomy, by itself, is a clear proof that it is an unnatural act. Moreover, from the time of Prophet Lot until today, sodomy has been prevalent in societies but with one big difference: In the past, despite its existence, sodomy was considered as a pervert sexual behaviour, whereas today, it has been labelled as a ‘natural act’ and an ‘inborn tendency’.
Secondly, Allah has created two different sexes of male and female for each other to satisfy their sexual instincts lawfully and for pro-creation purpose. The popular English saying is: God created Adam for Eve and not for Steve. People who indulge in sodomy are enemies of mankind who are going against the law of nature and creating serious hindrance in the development of human-race. The Holy Quran has termed such people as ‘Wasteful people’. “Verily you satisfy your lust with men instead of women. Nay, you are a wasteful people”. 7:81
Thirdly, Sodomy is like a cancer. If it is allowed to spread, it will spread like wild fire till it engulfs the entire society. Then, to put a stop to it will certainly not be easy without Divine intervention.
This indeed was the fate of the people of Prophet Lot. First, Satan led one person to commit this indecency. Later, that person invited others to the same evil. Finally, the crime reached such a gigantic proportion that it was common to see men mounting upon men and women mounting upon women before the onlookers. When Prophet Lot was sent to warn them, they rebelled against him. “And there was no answer from his people except that they said: Turn them out of your town. Verily they are a people who want to purify (themselves)”. 7:82
Then, the Divine intervention had to come. “So, We delivered him and his family, save his wife, who was of those who stayed behind And We rained down on them a shower (of stones). See then what was the end of the criminals”. 7:83-84
Imam Jaffar as-Sadiq has said: “Penetrating the anal opening is a greater sin than penetrating the vagina. Certainly Allah destroyed a complete nation (people of Lot) because they indulged in sodomy. Allah has not destroyed even one man for adultery”.
